Outside Employment Policy

Consideration of outside employment for full-time faculty members is governed by two concerns:

  • That the full-time faculty member maintain his/her primary focus on teaching, scholarship, service, and meeting the needs of Saint Mary’s students;
  • That there be no competition or conflict of interest between the outside work and the commitment to Saint Mary’s.

To ensure that these concerns are addressed, faculty members must request permission through their Department Chair before making external commitments. Requests must contain all pertinent information related to employment. The Department Chair will send this request along with a written recommendation to the Provost.

The final decision will be made by the Provost in consultation with the President. If a favorable decision is made, it will be effective only for that particular situation.
