Provost's Committees

Here are a list of committees that function at the behest of the Provost:

Assessment Committee – The Assessment Committee addresses and advances effective assessment of student achievement at Saint Mary’s, working in conjunction with academic departments, the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Vice President for Mission, and the Office of Institutional Research. The Assessment Committee oversees policies related to assessment; recommends applications for assessment grants to the Provost; and collaborates with relevant committees on assessment projects, including those related to the accreditation.

Curriculum Committee – The Curriculum Committee is the vehicle through which faculty, students and administrative representatives submit proposals on matters related to the College’s undergraduate curriculum. The Curriculum Committee reviews and recommends the addition or elimination of academic programs, degrees, and majors; reviews and recommends proposed changes in the number, kind, or distribution of requirements in Major Programs; reviews and recommends the general guidelines for reviews and recommends the general guidelines for Minor Programs; reviews and approves proposals for new courses, including the expeditious review and approval of experimental, special topics, and topics in courses; reviews course offerings which affect the degree requirements of more than one department or the College’s core curriculum of the College, and ensures the Bulletin and other relevant manuals conform to College Policy.

Graduate Program Committee – The Graduate Program Committee reviews and recommends to the Provost the approval of proposals with respect to new graduate programs granting Master’s and Doctoral Degrees. 

Program Review Committee – The Program Review Committee facilitates an annual, systematic self-assessment of institutional effectiveness for instructional, student services, administrative, and operational areas. The Program Review Committee provides training, feedback, commendations, and recommendations related to the program review process. 

Rank and Tenure Committee – The Rank and Tenure Committee evaluates and makes recommendations on individual petitions for tenure and promotion. The Rank and Tenure Committee also reviews candidates for Endowed Chairs and Professorships. 

Sophia Program Oversight Committee – The Sophia Program Oversight Committee regularly reviews the health, effectiveness, and sustainability and suitability of offerings within the Sophia Program in Liberal Learning. The Sophia Program Oversight Committee also recommends changes in the Sophia Program learning outcomes and program structure to the Academic Affairs Council; and implements assessment of the Sophia Program.

Student Affairs Committee – The Student Affairs Committee evaluates current policies for non-academic matters of student life, as well as proposing new policies to better adjust to the ever changing nature of student life in the campus community.
