Catholic & Holy Cross Tradition

Since its founding in 1844 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Saint Mary’s College is committed to educating students to develop their talents to make a difference in the world. Saint Mary’s embraces our historical relationship to the Sisters of the Holy Cross and takes ongoing inspiration from the Sisters’ global vision to witness God’s love in the world. To follow that example and extend the Holy Cross tradition of higher education into the future, Saint Mary’s commits its efforts to:

  • Develop critical thinking and interdisciplinary skills in an academic environment that values the essential role of spiritual growth in the development of the whole person.
  • Broaden students’ perspectives through dialogue that respectfully engages a wide variety of backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Deepen students’ awareness and understanding of social problems and inspire them to recognize the intrinsic dignity of all people through local, national, and international service opportunities.
  • Strive for social justice, engage in celebration of liturgy, and promote the discovery of a path that produces personal success and serves the common good.

In an environment where faith and reason flourish, Saint Mary’s forms women of action, promoting leadership rooted in humanity and spirituality. The values that have sustained the College for nearly 175 years continues to form the heart and mind of what makes the Saint Mary’s experience distinctive and they will continue to guide us into the future.
